This video work was inspired by the story of Katlijne Janssens (1606-1642), a victim of the persecution of witches in Flanders. What touched me most in Katlijne’s story, was how her body caused her trouble over and over again, because of the way others interpreted the behaviour and appearance of it.
At first I wanted to reconcile Katlijne with her body by means of a careful washing ritual. But I came to the conclusion that you can not wash away a violent past. Of course the work speaks also of the body and the on-going female attempt to reclaim it. The videos each start at another point in the action so you have a juxtaposition of a careful and a rough washing.
